The Golu, every year

Navaratri is nine nights, and in most Tamil homes it is marked by the Golu, or Kolu — dolls arranged on a stepped padi, gods, gurus and everyday figures together on the same stairs.

The dolls are not bought new each year. A good set is kept wrapped through the other eleven months and brought out again, joined slowly by a new piece every season.
